Being Seen

I’m back from a week in the Bay Area. The main event was the opening of my exhibit at the Gallery at the Geary on Saturday night.

The work was carefully curated (thank you Kevin Simmers), and the opening and reception that followed at the Simmers/Carrigan residence were wall-to-wall with celebrants. Selling four pieces on opening night is a good start, to be sure.

Like most artists, I am most moved by people really looking at my work. That’s how it felt on Saturday night–the deeply humbling joy of being seen.

I mentioned in my last posting that I was bringing along a few books to read. I finished two of them, Homo Aestheticus and Unnatural Wonders. I’ll have more to say about both of them (and some other highlights of the trip) once I’ve cleared off my desk.

Welcome back to Blogistan! Did I get this right — you opened your show and read two books in a week? (I am still trying to make it to The New Yorker.)

Four sales??? That’s splendid. The hanging looks great. You raise a very good point — these things are meant to be seen, yet we are always a little startled at evidence that’s what’s happening.

  2. Thank you E for your kind words. Your viewpoint means a lot to me (as you well know.)
